Wine region The Schilcherland
on the trail of wine
Why is it actually called Schilcherland? The Schilcherland in southwest Styria is named after Schilcher, a racy, aromatic wine that is famous in our region. Since 1976, Schilcher has been a legally protected term in the Styrian wine-growing region for the rosé wine made from the blue Wildbacher grape. Only wines that are 100% made from the blue Wildbacher grape and that ripen exclusively in Styria are allowed to bear the name "Schilcher". On the Schilcher wine route, you can follow in the footsteps of this popular grape variety. A tasting is a must. This much can be revealed: Schilcher tastes of currants, wild strawberries, raspberries, nettles and peppers.
The Schilcher Wine Route
The Schilcher Wine Route is one of the four wine and theme routes in southern Styria. If you want to explore the wine route, it is best to start in Ligist. From there it continues via Gundersdorf/St. Stefan ob Stainz up to Langegg/Greisdorf over the vineyards on the Hochgrail and further towards Stainz. Starting from Stainz, the wine route leads to Deutschlandsberg, Aichegg, Bad Schwanberg, Wies and finally ends in Eibiswald. In your holiday retreat at Am Wildbachberg you are right in the middle of it all and can set off from here in all directions on the wine route. The wine region also offers you a wide range of cycling and hiking options. We are happy to give you tips for your stay - there is something for every taste.
Buschenschänke, Sturm & Kastanien
At every corner of the wine route you will come across winegrowers and wine taverns, where a hearty West Styrian snack is served with the regional wines. In the colder autumn days, "Sturm & Kastanien" are the culinary highlight in the region. "Sturm" refers to the new wine, i.e. pressed grape must whose fermentation has just begun.
